Histoire :

Ernest « Ernie » Ladd est né le 28 Novembre 1938 et est décédé le 10 Mars 2007. Il était surnommé « The Big Cat », et un joueur de Foot US au collège et puis est passé jouer de Foot US professionnel avant de devenir catcheur professionnel. Alors qu’il est un hors concours au lycée, Ernie Ladd rejoint ensuite la Grambling State University avec une bourse de basket-ball avant d'être « Drafté » par les San Diego Chargers de l’American Football League en 1961. Ernie Ladd a eu du succès avec l'AFL et est considéré comme l'un des plus grands joueurs de l'histoire du football professionnel à 2m06 pour 148kg.

Il aidé les Chargers lors de quatre matchs de championnat AFL en cinq ans et remporte le championnat avec l'équipe en 1963. Il a également eu des matchs pour les Chiefs de Kansas City et les Oilers d’Houston. Ernie Ladd c’est également au catch professionnel au cours de la saison morte de l’AFL. C’est après une blessure au genou qui a terminée sa carrière au football qu’il est devenu catcheur à temps plein en 1969.

En tant que catcheur, Ernie Ladd est devenu l'un des « Heels » les plus grands du business. Pour une grande partie de sa carrière, il a joué un personnage crapuleux, arrogamment qui nargue ses adversaires ainsi que les foules. Ernie Ladd rivalise avec de nombreux catcheurs populaires de l'époque, y compris Wahoo McDaniel, André The Giant et M. Wrestling. Il se retire du catch en 1986.

Ernie Ladd est reconnu pour ses carrières dans le Football US et le catch. Il est intronisé au Hall of Fame des San Diego Chargers en 1981, à la Grambling State University Hall of Fame en 1989 et au WWF Hall Of Fame en 1995.

Ernie Ladd se voit diagnostiquer un cancer du côlon à l'hiver 2003-2004. Il est mort quelques années plus tard, le 10 Mars 2007, à l'âge de 68 ans.

Jeunesse :

Ernie Ladd est né à Rayville, Louisiane et grandit à Orange, Texas. Il est une star du Football US et du basket-ball au collège. Au lycée, il est entraîné par William Ray Smith, Sr., père de Bubba Smith. Ernie Ladd ensuite rejoint la Grambling State University avec une bourse en basket-ball.

Carrière Pro de Football US :

Bien qu'il soit « Drafté » dans le quatrième tour du « Draft » de la NFL en 1961 par les Bears de Chicago, les San Diego Chargers de l’American Football League a choisi l’étudiant de la Grambling State University comme leur 15ème choix (sur un ensemble de 119) dans le « Draft » de 1961.

À 2m06 et 148kg, Ernie Ladd et décrit à l’époque comme être l'homme le plus grand et le plus fort dans le Football US professionnel. Il fait 132 cm de poitrine, 99 cm de tour de taille, il a des biceps de 50 cm, le cou de 48 cm et la taille 54 en chaussures.

Ladd a joué dans quatre matchs de championnat AFL et permet aux Chargers de remporter le titre de la Ligue de Football Américain en 1963 avec son coéquipier Earl Faison, deux des membres de la « Fearsome Foursome » originale. Ernie Ladd, est All-Star de l’American Football League de 1962 à 1965. Il est l'un des joueurs de l'AFL qui ont organisé un débrayage lors de l'AFL All-Star Game 1965 en raison du racisme qu'ils ont subis à la Nouvelle Orléans.

Bien qu’Ernie Ladd ait trouvé le succès avec les Chargers, il a une relation controversée avec le management des Chargers. Il a commencé la saison 1965 en étant suspendu indéfiniment de l'équipe par le manager/Coach General, Sid Gillman.

Ernie Ladd déclare que lui et son coéquipier Earl Faison feront jouer leurs options de contrat et optent pour prendre 10% de baisse de salaire en échange de devenir agents libres à la fin de la saison. Un échange prévu avec les Oilers au début de 1966 doit envoyés Faison et Ladd à Houston. Toutefois ils sont déclarés agents libres suite à une décision rendue par le commissaire AFL Joe Foss, qui déclare que le propriétaire des Oilers, Bud Adams, a falsifié les relations commerciales avec les Chargers. Ernie Ladd a refusé de re-signer avec les Chargers et pense qu'il peut plutôt se tourner vers le catch professionnel à temps plein.

Finalement, Ernie Ladd signé avec les Oilers et passe la saison 1966 en jouant pour eux avant de passer en 1967 de côté des Chiefs de Kansas City. Là, avec son ancien coéquipier de Grambling, Buck Buchanan, ils sont ce qui est probablement le plus grand tandem de plaqueurs défensifs dans l'histoire. Les deux Ladd et Buchanan sont membres du Grambling State University Athletic Hall of Fame.

Le centre des Boston Patriots, Jon Morris, a dit qu’Ernie Ladd est si grand qu’il cache le soleil : « Il faisait nuit, je ne pouvais pas voir les seconds je ne voyais pas les règles du jeu, c’était comme être enfermé dans un placard.... ». En 1981, il est intronisé au Hall Of Fame des San Diego Chargers.

Carrière professionnelle de catch :

Ernie Ladd a commencé le catch en 1961. Comme un coup de publicité, certains catcheurs dans la région de San Diego ont challengés Ernie Ladd à une séance d'entraînement de catch privée. Pendant longtemps, Ernie Ladd est un concurrent à temps partiel à Los Angeles pendant la trêve de Football US. Ernie Ladd est devenu une énorme vedette à court terme. Lorsque des problèmes de genou ont mis à terme sa carrière de Football US, Ernie Ladd se tourna vers le business financièrement plus lucratif du catch pour y combattre à temps plein en 1969. Après un « Run » comme un favori des fans, Ernie Ladd est devenu l'un des « Heels » les plus détestés du catch dans les années 1970, ainsi que l'un des premiers catcheurs noirs à avoir une « Gimmick » de « Heel ». Il provoque les foules avec son attitude arrogante et s’énerve au cours des interviews, en particulier avec des surnoms politiquement corrects pour ses adversaires tels que Wahoo McDaniel (qu'il appelle « l’indien bourré») et M. Wrestling (qu'il appelle « Le Varmint Masqué » et insiste sur le fait qu'il est un criminel évadé). Ernie Ladd a aussi gagné l'infamie grâce à l'utilisation de son pouce enregistrée controversée qu’Ernie Ladd déclare venir d'une vieille blessure de football. Souvent, lorsqu’Ernie Ladd semble avoir de sérieux ennuis lors d'un match, il quitte le ring et préfère perdre par décompte. Cette pratique est devenue depuis connue sous le nom de « Pulling An Ernie Ladd » dans certains milieux.

Ladd a catché pour un certain nombre de différentes associations de catch, y compris le World Wide Wrestling Federation, où il est managé par The Grand Wizard of Wrestling.

Connu pour sa taille immense et sa puissance, il est naturel pour Ladd de se livrer à des « Feuds » contre d'autres géants, dont une célèbre « Feud » avec André le Géant (Que Ladd appelle « Andre the Dummy » ou « The Big Fat French Fry » pendant ses interviews).

Dans certaines régions, le surnom de catch de Ladd est « The King » et il y porte une couronne ornée pour souligner ce surnom.

La vie après le Catch :

Ernie Ladd est un ami de longue date de la famille Bush et a soutenu la campagne de de George W. Bush pour les présidentielles de 2000.

Ernie Ladd a également possédé et exploité le restaurant « Big Cat Ernie Ladd Throwdown BBQ Restaurant » à la Nouvelle Orléans, en Louisiane jusqu'au 29 Août 2005 ou le restaurant a été détruit par l'ouragan Katrina. Dans le sillage de l'ouragan, Ernie Ladd il a aidé les évacués de Katrina à l'Astrodome. Il était un ami du WWE Hall of Famer, le commentateur Jim Ross.

Ernie Ladd est également apparu dans un épisode de « That '70s Show » intitulé « This Wrestling Show ». Il y apparaît dans le vestiaire avec The Rock qui joue son père « Soul Man » Rocky Johnson, dont Eric et Red cherchent à avoir un autographe.

Il a également été entraîneur de basket-ball pour les jeunes enfants à Franklin, Louisiane.

Décès :

Ernie Ladd a été diagnostiqué d’un cancer du côlon à l'hiver 2003-2004. Son médecin lui a dit qu'il avait trois à six mois à vivre. Ernie Ladd est mort quelques années plus tard le 10 Mars 2007, à l'âge de 68 ans. Il laisse derrière lui sa femme de 45 ans et leurs quatre enfants.
